BEGINNING FLAMENCO GUITAR CLASS
This four-week workshop is for beginners and those who feel like beginners, anyone who wants a firm grounding in the mechanics of guitar playing and the basics of flamenco music before tackling the challenges of solo flamenco music or working with singers or dancers.
We'll cover the basics, including how to hold the guitar, left and right hand positions and essential flamenco techniques and we'll introduce some important flamenco rhythms and forms. This is the place to bring all your flamenco questions, We'll talk about choosing a flamenco guitar , important flamenco resources and players, and recommend some essential recordings and places to hear live flamenco.
This class includes material I cover with every student I teach, whether they're an absolute beginner or a professional recording artist. Taking this class will get you off to a great start.
Please bring a nylon-string guitar, a capo, and, if you wish, a recording device.
FLAMENCO ACCOMPANIMENT WORKSHOP
There are very few places anywhere where a guitarist can learn how to accompany flamenco singers and dancers. There aren't even any books that explain how to do it. There's simply no substitute for direct experience, so Katerina and I started an ongoing series of workshops focused on teaching guitarists how to work with dancers and singers.
Each four-week workshop focuses on a specific palo. Students learn the overall form of that palo and the aural and visual cues that singers and dancers give guitarists during a performance. They also learn the chords to traditional flamenco letras within that palo. We talk about compas and rhythm and how to balance dance and cante accompaniment. Each student is given a CD that includes a practice rhythm track, sample falsetas and recorded examples of that palo from leading artists such as Paco de Lucía, Camarón de la Isla, Tomatito and others.
By the end of each workshop, every student gets to accompany Katerina dancing and singing. Workshop students are also invited to join me in accompanying Katerina's regular dance classes. Many of my students have gone on to accompany flamenco dance classes on their own. You can too!
